Special delivery: Q&A on DiskAid for iPhone/iPod Touch

It's a real bummer for those untouched gigabytes space in your iPhone or iPod Touch, not all of us have a gigantic music or video collection that we can shove in to it.

Well, at least when you wish to include music collection from the 80's that you've been hiding under your bed and don't want your friends/co-workers to know. ;-)

But that's just music, how about the idea of using the bountiful space for extra storage when you need to take your files on the go and no USB memory stick seen around? I know some of you love to whine about storage shortage, and with a cutting-edge mobile device in your hands must've been driving you insane not to able to use it.

Then here's a good news for you, a Switzerland-based company called DigiDNA has provided iPhone & iPod Touch owners a perfect solution for above case. DigiDNA's program called DiskAid will allow you to use the aforementioned Apple's devices as external hard drives. Let me explain DiskAid's features one by one as what have been mentioned on the web page:
  • PC Windows & Mac OSX compatibility. Yup, either you're a true Apple fans or not; you can still enjoy DiskAid both on Windows or Mac OS X platforms. Like you can see on the right tumbnail pictures, click to enlarge them.
  • Auto detection feature, just plugin it in. Launch DiskAid and it'll automatically search for your iPhone that attached to its USB connection, if it can't find the iPhone then DiskAid will prompt you to connect.
  • Copy Files & Folders between your iPhone or iPod Touch and your Computer. The user interface of DiskAid won't be a bother for anyone who're familiar with Windows' File Explorer or iTunes, because it looks and works almost the same.
  • Files & Folders Browser. It's not only for copying files & folders, but also to browse any of them inside the iPhone / iPod Touch.
  • Drag & Drop. One simple and common feature that often forgotten to be included, and thank goodness DigiDNA put it into DiskAid.
  • Features rich file organization including folder creation, renaming... etc. Just like what said there, you can edit the files & folders through DiskAid.
  • No jailbreak needed. You heard that right, you don't need to jail-break your iPhone. Because DiskAid is a desktop program, no need to install it in iPhone / iPod Touch.
  • Supported firmware versions : 1.1.1 to 1.1.4. Good news for you who love to keep your iPhone's firmware updated.
  • DiskAid is a Freeware, 100% free of charge. Our favorite word: FREE!

If you really interested, then head-on to the download page. Why not, right? It's free after all, but will it stays like that? How about compability support for iPhone 3G? Hold on your tight-little pans there my friends, roll on below to read the whole answer that I've managed to ask Michael from DigiDNA. And like always, I'll lay them all bare naked so you'll have nothing but the truth. ;-D

  1. I see the DiskAid is a free app, will it stays free in the future? --- Yes, we're planning to keep DiskAid completely free of charge.
  2. The current DiskAid supports up to firmware 1.1.4, but will it support iPhone 2.0 platform (iPhone 3G)? --- There shouldn't be any problems with 2.0, we're fairly confident we'll be able to to be 2.0 compliant.
  3. Will we see DiskAid in Apple's App Store when it launch on July 11th? --- No, the app store only distributes apps for the iPhone, DiskAid is a desktop application.
  4. DiskAid works really great, do you plan to add more features later? --- Yes, we'll add new features on each release, they will revolve around file copying, we want DiskAid to stay a file transferring tool, and to do it with perfection.
  5. I know sometimes companies keep tight on their future products, but perhaps you could share with us on what other new apps are you preparing? --- Sorry! All I can ay is we've got plenty of ideas in the pipe! --- Dang! Too bad... ;-p

Special thanks to DigiDNA, especially Michael for giving us more insight on DiskAid. Keep up the great works guys!
