Envy for Palm’s applications

Envy, one of the seven of human’s deadly sins; has been stalking me over the past months. But don’t let the image of horror from the Se7en movie smear your perception on this post, because I’m just talking about how I covets for Palm user’s wide range of 3rd applications options available for them. ;-p

Ever since I got my hands on my Treo 750v, I’ve been stuffing it with apps that I need (and sometimes, apps that I don’t need, only just few of them). But let’s face it, there have been many times do I see myself lusting for Palm’s apps. Especially when I read news & reviews of them on the net or at PA, thanks to Simon Higginson for that ;-D. I ain’t gonna talk long and bore you while comparing each apps from both mobile OS, but instead, there are two fine examples that have been mentioned at PA:

My fellow Associate Writer; Isaiah Henni, has
asked if anyone know a Windows Mobile application that has similar functionalities like Hobbyist Software’s Butler. Now, since I’ve never own a Palm OS device; I don’t know exactly how it works. Just by reading the reviews and user’s satisfaction on using it, Butler is definitely a very useful and must have app. Sure, WinMob already has built-in alarm features in it. But sometimes, no, not just sometimes; it’s even very often that I needed such reminder app more than just few built-alarms that the mobile OS has provided.

Another one came from Harold Arnold, at Berkeley; which his email was posted by Sammy
here. He mentioned about a Palm app called Barcode/13, the app will enhance your Treo devices camera into a barcode scanner. When I read the news, I said: “What!? I’ve been looking for such app!” You see, because of my line of work is evolving around retail business; I’m pretty much meet with barcode every day. Thus I think it would be very handy, if my Treo can become a portable barcode scanner. Why, oh why no one make app like that for WinMob? And the worst thing I envy is, that the app is free! I can’t imagine how expensive it would be if a WinMob software developer made it, since it’s a very useful tool for almost every business nowadays.

I don’t want to go back and talk about the “Is Palm OS dying?” subject again, because the above invidias of mine have already answered the question there. And I don’t wish to talk about the unreleased yet of Palm Nova OS, it’s too early to know. Since I deeply believe, as not just Palm fans but also other mobile OS users too, that Palm OS Garnet will continue to live up. Well, at least until another mobile OS, that can offer support for many apps like Palm OS Garnet does, appears on the horizon.
