Sony Ericsson's W980 is a flashy music phone

Sony Ericsson is planning to keep fresh of its W-series line up with a cool new W980, where as usual the W980 will sports clamshell form factor and continue to rely on its music feature (still dubbed as "Walkman") as the main selling point.
There are two features that distinguish Sony Ericsson Walkman handsets from its competitors; SenseMe and Shake control. The SenseMe feature will automatically group the musics you've played, and the Shake control allows you to change music tracks simply by a click of a button & wave right-left the handset.

The menu is colorful, but a bit old and lack of intuitive animations for my taste. And the camera and features for capturing pictures, are not going to have more credit than the standard bar. Looks like Sony Ericsson is concentrating W980 to its main purpose: for music entertainment, and to push down W980 already high price tag around US$599.99 when it comes out on Q3 of this year.

Here are the rundown of W980 full specs:
  • Quad GSM band
  • 3G capable network (HSDPA)
  • 2.2-inch at 240x320 pixels resolution, and 256K colors of internal display
  • external display at 256K colors and 176x176 pixels resolution
  • 8GB internal memory
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
  • USB 2.0
  • 3.15M pixels camera
  • FM radio with RDS
  • SenseMe & Shake control

It's a real disappointment for there's no memory expansion slot, because 8GB of shared internal memory surely is not enough for hardcore music fans. But perhaps Sony Ericsson is hoping to distract your attention with a transparent strip located at its lower part of the front clamshell, where it can illuminate light effects that in sync with the music or game currently played.

Other than that, I'm not too fond with the round keypad buttons style. Maybe this W980 is not one of the ultimate music mobile phone out there, but sure does looks cool and attractive. Check out GSMArena's review for more galleries, details, and 360-degree look of W980.
