Smartphone for car key

Convergence device (for smartphone) has a new additional feature: smart key phone for automobile/car. Or as in Nissan's own term is called; Built-in Intelligent Key.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., NTT DOCOMO, INC. and Sharp Corporation announced at Sept 24th, 2008 that they have jointly developed a mobile phone capable of functioning as an intelligent key for automobiles - a world's first. What's so intelligent about this Mobile Phone with Built-in Intelligent Key?

For example, the driver can easily lock or unlock the car from as far as one meter away with a press of a button. It can also be used to start or stop the car, providing that the cell phone is inside the vehicle. An electromagnetic sensor detects the presence of the phone, allowing the driver to start the engine by simply pushing the ignition button.

At the moment, the companies only have a prototype of the phone but there are plans to commercialize the handset within 2009. The prototype flip phone is based on Sharp's SH906i model, the only difference being the addition of two buttons in the phone's upper right corner that are used to lock/unlock the vehicle; which works and compatible with 950,000 Nissan vehicles.

Now here comes a new rising security concern: who is more elligible to make this 'smart key phone'? The mobile manufacturer, or the autombile company? Users must beware of the possibility of security leaks, if both companies made the device...
